Medical Student Family Medicine Rotations in Colorado

Each residency program offers sub-internships or clerkships to forth year medical students. Contact the Colorado Osteopathic Education Center about scheduling rotations for third and forth year Osteopathic students.

Exempla Saint Joseph Famly Medcine Residency - Denver, CO

We welcome fourth year students with a strong interest in Family Medicine, for 2-to 4-week rotations. One-half of the rotation is spent working with our residents and faculty in our day-to-day clinic operations. In addition, we will craft a curriculum which emphasizes the student's special interests. Choices include our Sports Medicine clinic, participation with Team Physicians for high school and local professional teams, obstetrical ultrasound clinic, colposcopy clinic and other specialized care. The rest of the rotation is spent with the inpatient team, delivering our obstetrical patients, following newborns, participating in circumcision clinic if desired, caring for pediatric and adult medicine patients, and rounding on our critically ill patients. Students will have the opportunity to observe and/or participate in all aspects of the inpatient setting, including special procedures, radiology rounds, didactic conferences, and close participation with medicine and surgical subspecialists. An extensive noon conference curriculum is in place, with both core faculty and guest presenters. Noon meals and parking are provided. Call is not required but welcome. We are happy to host allopathic and osteopathic students, and have multiple residents who perform OMM in the clinic setting. For more information on this program, visit http://GME/Exempla.org/FamilyMed or contact Jan Notch, Program Coordinator, at (303) 318-2015.

Residency Training in Colorado: Unique opportunities for residents

Global Health

Expempla Saint Joseph's - One of ESJ's central missions is to provide care to the underserved populations

One of the Family Medicine Residency Program's central missions is to provide care to underserved populations.
The program believes strongly in offering global health experiences as part of the residents' training.
We have a long history of resident and faculty involvement in global health projects.
We have several sites that residents participate on a regular basis where well established programs are located, but residents are not limited to choose these locations.
Established sites include: Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica and Guatemala
Residents have also participated in programs in Cameroon and Zimbabwe.
Residents are allowed to use a 1 month elective time block during their 3rd year to participate in this opportunity if they meet residency time and patient care requirements.
Field experiences vary depending on location but primarily involve direct clinical care (usually in rural areas), public health education projects, and occasionally hospital experiences.
A faculty member frequently accompanies the residents on the Peru and Ecuador trips.  Faculty members are also involved in organization and preparatory work for all other locations.

Rural/Underserved Resident Rotation

All family medicine residents training in Colorado are required to complete a one-month rotation in a rural or underserved community. Strong preference is given to training in a rural setting. The rotation is a significant component of a family physician's training in Colorado. The Rural/Underserved rotation is a collaborative effort of the nine family medicine residencies and twelve community practices. The purpose of the rotation is for the resident to experience first-hand the challenges and rewards of being a competent family physician in a rural and medically underserved setting with limited medical resources. Additionally, this experience exposes the resident to the qualities of community life, such as local pride in and support of its hospital, schools, churches and community events and activities. This rotation offers the resident the opportunity to draw upon her/his accumulated pool of knowledge in a real-life setting some distance from the training program.
